    WHAT IS MOISTURE WICKING?

Moisture wicking is a property of fabric that keeps skin cool and dry. Activewear including running clothes, sports gloves, and undergarments commonly include a moisture-wicking feature that drives out sweat, prevents odor, and protects athletes and outdoors enthusiasts from illness and disease caused by damp clothing.

    HOW DOES MOISTURE WICKING WORK?

Moisture-wicking fabric pushes moisture from the inner layer of the fabric to the outer layer, where it can evaporate. Some materials, like polyester and nylon, are water-repellent and tend to naturally wick moisture. Cotton, on the other hand, is the opposite, having the ability to hold and retain up to 25 percent its weight in water.

High-tech moisture wicking fabric is simultaneously absorbent and repellent –– enabling it to both collect liquid and disseminate it into the air.

    WHAT IS CAPILLARY ACTION?

Capillary action is what happens when a liquid moves from a broad space into a narrow space, sometimes in opposition with outside forces like gravity. The intermolecular forces between the liquid and surrounding surfaces propel the liquid up or away from its original position.

For example, when you dip a dry paintbrush into a cup of water, capillary action is what draws the water up and into the bristles. Another example is the placement of a narrow tube into a pool of water.
Capillary action sucks the water up into the tube, above the water level of the pool.

    DOES MOISTURE WICKING ACTUALLY WORK?

Yes. Through the combined power of hydrophobic fibers and capillary action, moisture wicking is a scientifically proven method for drawing water away from one surface and into the air. Some clothing manufacturers use a spray-on chemical that gives fabric moisture wicking properties. Others simply use fibers that repel water, alone or in combination with absorbent fibers like cotton. Regardless of the method, when capillary action inevitably coaxes sweat away from skin and into fabric, a moisture-wicking fabric will always reject the water, pushing it toward the surface and into the air.

HOW DO URBAN BOUNDARIES MOISTURE WICKING GLOVES WORK?

We treat the body material of our gloves with a moisture-wicking solution. The solution enables the gloves to collect moisture from inside the gloves, pushing it to the exterior of the glove where it can evaporate. Our wicking agent, combined with the material itself, makes our gloves some of the best running gloves for moisture wicking on the market.
