    WHAT IS A 3-IN-1 JACKET?

The 3-in-1 is a type of ski jacket that can be worn in three different styles. There are two layers that make up the 3-in-1 jacket — a shell jacket, for the waterproofing outer layer, and a removable inner layer, which is typically made of fleece, softshell, or insulated mesh. These layers are fitted together using zippers or, less commonly, three-point snaps.

    WHAT’S A “SHELL JACKET”?

The shell jacket is waterproof and made up of two or three layers. The two-layer design features a waterproof lining over a loose inner mesh. The three-layer design includes a tough outer layer that adds a level of durability not found in the thinner, and more basic, two-layer design. Both styles of shell jacket are frequently seam taped, and are also finished with a durable water repellent.

    WHAT IS “SEAM TAPED”?

A jacket that has been seam taped is outfitted with waterproof tape around all of the seams. For skiers, this is exceptionally useful when encountering wet snow at lower elevations.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A 3-IN-1 JACKET?

The 3-in-1 jacket is useful during varying weather conditions, because the layers can be separated into three styles:
    ● Waterproof and fleece/softshell/insulated layer attached via zipper
    ● Waterproof outer layer
    ● Fleece/softshell/insulated layer
The first style works well for normal conditions during the winter. In warmer weather, either of the last two options work well. Together, these options make the 3-in-1 an excellent year round jacket.

WHO WOULD USE A 3-IN-1 JACKET?

Nearly anyone who may find themselves in unpredictable weather will appreciate a 3-in-1 jacket. Skiers, hikers, climbers, hunters and motorcyclists would all benefit from the versatility of this style. For skiers specifically, the 3-in-1 is a popular choice for a first ski jacket.

DO I NEED A SPECIAL JACKET?

If you’re sticking to a casual skiing routine in mild weather conditions, you probably don’t need an advanced jacket. For this kind of use, just about any ski jacket from one of the reputable brands should suffice. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you want to stay warm and you want to stay dry.
Outside of the boundaries of a resort, more extreme conditions can occur. In these instances, you’ll need a ski jacket that is waterproof and has been seam taped.

IS A 3-IN-1 JACKET MORE EXPENSIVE THAN A REGULAR JACKET?

Usually, the 3-in-1 jacket is a money-saver. More elaborate and expensive models exist in the $150-200 range, but it’s not uncommon to find a 3-in-1 for $75-$100. Urban Boundaries offers a premium men's 3-in-1 ski jacket for only $79.95 plus free shipping.
